Statue of Unity inaugurated by Narendra Modi

‘The Statue of Unity’, stutue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is being inaugurated today, October 31 marking 143rd birth anniversary of India’s ‘Iron Man’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the ‘Statue of Unity’, touted as the world’s tallest statue, to the nation on Wednesday.

It is twice the height of Statue of Liberty and is built on an islet, Sadhu Bet, near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district.

The Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world. At 182 metres, it is 23 metres taller than China’s Spring Temple Buddha statue and almost double the height of the Statue of Liberty (93 metres tall) in US.

  1. Statue of Unity was built within three-and-a-half years by an army of over 3,000 workers, including 300 engineers from infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T).  The project costed nearly Rs 3,050 crore.

2. 129 tonnes of iron from nearly 100 million farmers in 169,000 villages across all states has been collected to construct the base of the statue in the ‘Loha’ campaign.

3. The Statue of Unity was built by Padma Bhushan recipient sculptor Ram V Sutar.

4. The viewing gallery for the statue is at 153 metres and it can accommodate 200 people at a time.
