Devaki(Sridevi) is a Mom of two teenage daughters. One of them a stepdaughter hates and disobeys Devaki. Against Mom’s will, she goes on late night parties. One unfortunate night, she gets brutally raped and murdered by her classmates. The family is further subjected to humiliation and are denied justice in the court, the culprits are set free as they belong to a politically well-off background. Devaki is set to take revenge. Kapoor, a lawyer helps her in this process.
Mom is a intense revenge drama. Story is quite routine. Film moves at snail pace. It neither has thrilling elements nor does it have entertainment stuff. The film’s only connecting factor is that it deals with current burning issue of sexual crimes that have been rampant in recent times.
Its serious saga of pain stricken mother. Second half deals with how the helpless mom avenges her daughter’s murderers by going against all odds and taking on corrupt system. Sridevi delivers a terrific performance. Her screen presence and powerful presentation of dialogues makes the film gripping. In some scenes she moves us to tears.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui too gives a stellar performance, he gives some comic relief through his quirky characterization. Akshay Khanna is decent as investigating officer. AR Rahman’s music is world class and gives the emotional depth to the shallow scenes. Mom’s production values are pretty high.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s character
Not so gripping screenplay
Bottom-line: Sridevi lives-upto expectation but Mom disappoints
