Screenplay:

Khakee is a cop action thriller not on regular template. The film appears extensively researched and documented. Khakee is claimed to be based on true incidents. The film spans over series of events from 1995 to 2005. Director H Vinoth keeps it as much rustic and raw as possible. First half is racy and entertaining. Romantic episode between lead pair is appealing. Songs only come in background and are cut short and it disappoints music lovers as the album has been topping charts. Investigation detailing is absorbing and as hero intelligently connects the dots to corner the target. Edge-of-the-seat interval takes it all to a high.

Second half is set in dry terrains of UP, Haryana and Rajasthan. The films gets into action mode and direct combat with the gang. Some intelligent and unpredictable twists keep it thrilling. However, it gets exhaustive over a time just as the cops get drained chasing the criminals. Perhaps, it could be blamed on the lengthy runtime at 2 hours 37 minutes.

Performances

Karthi gets into the skin of the role. His suave appearance to intense performance is convincing as a fierce realistic cop rather than cinematic one. Rakul Preet is cheerful and provides comic relief in this otherwise serious drama. Abhimanyu Singh and his dacoit gang are good.

Technical aspects:

Ghibran gives a terrific BGM, heart pounding at crucial episodes. Cinematography by Sathyam Sooryan needs special pat for giving the film racing effect. Stunt choreography is commendable for the those adrenaline rushing action episodes.

Bottom-line: Khakee – Researched and refined cop action thriller
