Jayaram(Mohanlal) works is visually impaired lift operator. He is respected for his honesty and kindness. Krishnamurthy (Nedumudi Venu) is a retired judge whose granddaughter Nandini (Baby Meenakshi) is studying in Ooty boarding school.

She has life threaten from a serial killer Vasudev(Samuthirakani) who is convicted by Krishnamurthy. Cops too gets bribed and turns anti. Krishnamurthy lays the responsibility of safe guarding Nandini on Jayaram’s shoulders. How sightless Jayaram protects the child from the deadly psycho and wicked cops forms the story.

Kanupapa is dubbed version of Malayalam hit film ‘Oppam’. Superstar Mohanlal is the strength of the film. Mohanlal gets into the skin of blind lift operator. He amazes with his performance and keeps audience glued to the seats. Mohanlal precisely balances his act between blind yet clever guy and gutsy heroism. It doesn’t appear go overboard only because of him.

Kanupapa is a thriller with emotional drama. Screenplay hangs between being a thriller and a emotional saga. First half is lighter with establishing characters and the peaceful environment. Post interval film gets heavier with emotions. Psycho killer is used as an instrument to drive sentiments. In the process, director seems to have forgot that the film is a thriller.

It could have been even more engrossing with intriguing scenes to give a thriller appeal. Last half-n-hour the graph drops further with slow pace. However, Mohanlal’s flawless performance is what keeps it going. Baby Meenakshi also delivers considerable performance to her age. Samuthirakani looks more like a professional killer rather than a psycho. Lady cop played by Anusree is not convincing.
