Arjun Reddy(Vijay Devarakonda) is an aggressive medico who falls in love with a college fresher Preeti(Shalini), a Tulu girl. Both get closer and intimate over a period. However, Preeti’s father rejects their relationship and gets her married off to a boy of their community.
Heart-broken Arjun Reddy is estranged. He turns alcoholic and a drug addict. His medical profession is at stake. Will Arjun Reddy ever get back to normal? Will he gain senses? Will he ever meet Preeti again?
Arjun Reddy garnered huge buzz ahead of release due to the liplocks and cuss words in the movie. Well, the film is not just about that. Arjun Reddy is rustic love story made with realistic and natural approach of filmmaking. It’s a dark subject that deals with intense emotions and pain. Arjun Reddy could be called as modern day Devdas. The film can be compared to popular break-up movies like Sethu (Seshu), Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D and 7G Brindavan Colony.
The first half is at a different level all together. It introduces a bold and fresh treatment never seen before on Telugu screen. The campus scenes and romantic scenes between lead pair are well filmed. Close to real witty dialogues leave an impact. Post interval, film drops drastically. Plot deviates from the actual for a while and is completely lost.
Lot of stuff can be chopped off from second half. Too much stress on hero’s drug addiction and pain makes it tedious after a time. It becomes a test of patience towards the climax.
Vijay Devarakonda steals the show. His screen presence to arrogant behavior that he presented through his expression and bodylanguage is the main USP of the film. He appeared flamboyant like rockstar from his attire to attitude. Arjun Reddy stays on the minds for long. Next actor worth a mention is Rahul Ramakrishna, who played the close friend of Arjun Reddy. He evoked laughs with his comical dialogue delivery. Kamal Kamaraju is decent as Arjun Reddy’s caring brother. Yesteryear actress Kanchana gives amazing performance as a cool granny.
Heroine Shalini is simple and homely. Cinematography takes away lot of credit for presenting the film in new light. The gloomy essence of the film is underlined by the camera work. Music compliments that mood.
Arjun Reddy characterization and Vijay Devarkonda’s performance
Absorbing first half
Haywire second half
Bottom-line: Arjun Reddy – is one more bold step ahead for TFI
